Physical Description:
Khalisa is an igneous mermaid, a subspecies that evolved around volcanic outflows and hydrothermal vents. Like many of her kind, she was exposed to fire ophelium as a fetus and as such has a remarkable resistance to heat. She can even survive in lava for a short period of time. She doesn’t do well in the cold, however, and has been known to lie down in fireplaces during winter. In her mermaid form, Khalisa was born with features resembling a shark. She has a mouth full of tiny, sharp teeth that regularly fall out and replace themselves. She has the sleek tail of a shark, with the upper lobe being much longer than the lower one. The sides and top of the tail are dark blue while the underside is white, and she has long pectoral fins. Khalisa is generally completely unclothed in mermaid form, except for the occasional jewellery that she finds in shipwrecks.
In human form, Khalisa has a more normal-sized mouth, but her teeth remain tiny and pointy. Otherwise, her skin and face remain the same. She has average-sized breasts and golden-brown skin. Her eyes are large and very dark, matching her thick eyebrows and black curls. Her hair goes just past her shoulders. Her frame is overall slim, but she has large hips. Her face has very defined bone structure with full lips, an arched forehead, and a bold nose. Khalisa tends to dress fairly oddly- clothing is still a new concept to her and so she doesn’t quite know how to match colours and fabrics. Generally she picks bright colours and materials that involve a great deal of lace and ruffles.
Personality:
Khalisa is a woman who has a good mind for administration and an almost uncanny devotion to education- two things that make her very different from others of her race. She serves as the mermaid ambassador with charm, grace, and careful favours. She is studied in world politics and history and is therefore a very successful diplomat. She carries herself like a lady and tries to never let any passionate emotions show, although this is sometimes easier said than done. She is both feminine and proper, and otherwise incredibly well suited to the political world of Verden. However, this has somewhat alienated her amongst her people. Reading, writing, and the dance of politics are not realms particularly understood or cherished by mermaids, and many of Khalisa’s kind feel that she has it easy. Her common background is also often commented on by nobility. Khalisa tries to ignore these criticisms, and they have not dulled her desire to better things for her people.
History:
Khalisa was born in the mermaid city of Aurelia, close to the Verden town of Limáni. Her proximity to land and its strange people fascinated her from a young age. She snuck into schools on land and into her sisters’ lessons, desperate for knowledge. Her parents were both traders who were comfortable with two-legged species, and so allowed her passionate interest. Khalisa was so devoted to learning that if she did not learn fast enough, she would cut off all her hair. She spent hours above water to be able to read. And thusly, Khalisa developed two skills that were scarce among mermaids- reading and writing. Her abilities became common talk among the people of Aurelia, and eventually word spread to Limáni.
The governor of Limáni invited Khalisa to his daughter’s ball. At the ball, he gathered some of the greatest minds in all of Verden to test her. Mermaids were not renowned for their intelligence, and no one believed in her abilities. Khalisa blew them away with her knowledge. It was this party that earned her a recommendation to the University of Limáni. Khalisa studied there for four years before being appointed as the official ambassador to the mermaid embassy in Atma. Although surrounded by gossip and trivialities, Khalisa is eager to represent her race and perhaps earn a better standing for them in Verden.
