Verden is ruled by a council of four representatives overseen by a high king or queen. Each representative is a member of the most powerful races on the continent: Humans, elves, fae, dracolisks and centaurs. Each species is responsible for various components of government.*
Centaurs tend to form the bulk of the military. They are respected for their contributions to peacekeeping and patrolling the various demilitarized zones in Verden.
Elves are diplomats and mediators, influential both due to their beauty and favouring cooperation over conflict.
Fae are responsible for intelligence and information. Their observational skills and non-linear thinking make them useful for espionage.
Dracolisks represent magical and scientific progress because their race values intellectual superiority above all else, and thus their technology is second to none.
Humans mainly form the economic background. The aggressive approach to trading and business by a multitude of merchant princes has established Verden as one of the richest countries in the world.
No one race is able to overpower the others, and for hundreds of years no other races have been allowed to reach council status. The council’s decisions are seen as absolute, and they are backed by armies, intelligence networks and economic powers. Even in neighbouring countries, their decisions have a great deal of impact. As a result, these five races are the most valued in Verden’s society. Although a few other races do have embassies to make their voices heard, these embassies can be revoked as quickly as they are given.
*Note: Just because a race specializes in a certain area doesn't mean your character has to.
